Jan Vogtman

ARTIST BIO:

Jan Vogtman grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and moved to Moscow, Idaho in 1985.  She and her husband Bob currently live on the east ridge of Mosco Mountain near Troy.  Jan is inspired by rural landscapes, old farms, and aging buildings with "personality."  She has taken workshops from well known artists and in 1998 became interested in watercolor while taking classes at the University of Idaho.  She joined Palouse Watercolor Socius (PWS) in 1999 and has participated in over 20 shows with the group.  Recently Jan had her first solo Plein Air Exhibit at the Center for Arts and History in Lewiston, Idaho.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I am inspired by light, shadow, the sky when a storm is brewing, trees and the shapes of the land--field, forest, stream, and mountain.  My inspiration comes from life experiences too, where I have been and where I am now.  As I travel the rural roads, my eye catches images that I want to paint, my camera is always with me.  When I paint I try to capture that emotional connection and pass it on to the viewer.

Traditional and realistic best describes my work.  I love detail, which is a challenge in watercolor--it is the challenge that I crave/enjoy and the fact that I am always learning.  My philosophy--painting is good for ones mental health and feeds the soul .

Memberships:  Palouse Watercolor Socius, Idaho Watercolor Society, Inland Northwest Watercolor Society and Northwest Watercolor Society.
