Betty Benson  (in memoriam)

    (March 29, 1943 - January 9, 2020)

Our wonderful friend Betty was a long-time member of PWS and contributed to our group in many ways. She was on our education committee and encouraged us to learn as much about painting as we could by reading, attending workshops, sharing ideas at meetings and experimenting. Betty enthusiastically supported her fellow artists and often welcomed us into her home to paint and share stories. Read more about Betty's life.

This is the biography that Betty wrote for our website several years ago:

Betty's arts experiences include drawing, calligraphy, design, weaving and related fiber arts techniques, and oil painting.  Her mission is to pursue the challenge of watercolor painting until she is “good,” -- whatever that means.

Betty is a member of the Palouse Watercolor Socius and of Idaho Watercolor Society.  She is former President and Vice-President of PWS.  She is former Commissioner with Idaho Commission on the Arts and served as the Recognition Chair of ICA during the 1984 Governor’s Awards in the Arts.  She is a founding member of the Pend d’Oreille Arts Council in Sandpoint, Idaho and is currently the North Region Representative for IWS.

Betty has studied art at University of Idaho and North Idaho College, and also with private individuals.  She earned Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and Master of Science in Geography at the University of Idaho.  She attended watercolor workshops taught by Stan Miller and Susan Rohrbach of Spokane, and Roberta Tieman of Colfax.

Betty lives and works at her home outside Moscow where she paints, gardens, reads good books, makes paper mache musical instruments and hand-quilted quilts, and dreams of travel to far away places.  She sometimes goes there.
